Cleaning Your Wood Blinds

Cleaning blinds, whether metal or wood, is a bear, there's no two ways about it. It's very time consuming and a hassle, but I guess it's just the nature of the beast. So if you have blinds and you love them, you want to take care of them. Cleaning your blinds is important to continued enjoyment and to preserve their beauty and functionality. Here are a few brief tips that might speed the process along - or not.

  • If wooden blinds are sealed, they can be washed.
  • Dust or vacuum blinds first before doing anything else.
  • Adjust blinds downward.
  • Mix a few capfuls of liquid dishwashing detergent in water.
  • Wash each slat one at a time with damp rag (not saturated).
  • Dry with dry towel.
  • Be sure to wash both sides of each slat.
  • To clean the cord, pull the blind all the way up to expose as much cord as possible.
  • Run damp rag up and down it once; then repeat with dry towel.

There is no quick and easy solution when it comes to how to clean wood blinds. Be sure that the wood is sealed before you put any liquid on them. Most are, but it's best to check first before you start.
